Usher Raymond IV was born October 14, 1978. As a six year-old, he
started singing in the church choir, led by his mother, Jonetta Patton.
Usher's family moved from Chattanooga to Atlanta when he was twelve years
old, and two years later at the age of 14, a record executive from
LaFace Records discovered the young singer, signing him to his first
contract when he was still in high school.
At the age of 16, the young man released his first album, "Usher" with
executive producer P. Diddy in 1994. Sales were disappointing, though it
generated the hit single, "Think of You." Soon after, Coca-Cola acquired
his services for a holiday jingle, and he united with R&B chanteuse,
Monica, for a remake cut on her album. His later union with Alicia Keys
is notable for "My Boo" ft Alicia Keys.
In 1997, after graduating from high school, the young man released his
second album, "My Way," in which he took creative control, with the help
of co-writers and co-producers, Jermaine Dupri and Babyface. The
experimental hip-hop styled "Nice 'N' Slow" was a US chart-topper the
next year. The album reached Number #4 on the Billboard 200 and number
#1 on the R&B album charts. Soon after, Usher became the opening act for
Janet Jackson on her Velvet Rope Tour.
In the late 1990s, while taking time out for acting jobs, Usher released
his "Live" album (1999). He appeared in the television series, "The
Bold and the Beautiful" (1998) and "Moesha," (1997-1998). He also found
roles in movies, including "The Faculty" (1998), "Light It Up" (1999),
"She's All That" (1999), "Gepetto" (2000), and "Texas Rangers," (2001).
The year 2001 saw the release of his album "8701" (named after the date of its release). With its hip-hop feel, it soon became a chart-topper on both sides of the ocean, with significant successes in the UK and Australia. In March 2004, he released his album, "Confessions" which has sold more than 3 million copies, and the feature single "Yeah!" has been capturing audiences everywhere. In its first week, "Confessions" sold more than 1.1 million records, the most sales ever for an R&B artist and the highest sales by any artist in three years. Usher has since won a Grammy for best male R&B vocal for his work on "U Remind Me." 15hqql.
