Jay-Z was born Shawn Corey Carter on December 4, 1969 in Brooklyn.
After the expected rough childhood on the cement jungle of New York, he
made his way to rap, accompanied by his street name. His clothes were
"Jazzy", so he became Jay-Z, making an early mark by creating his own
record label (along with friends Damon Dash and Kareem Burke). The
innovative label eliminated the middleman that could cut profits and
attract dishonest representation.
Jay-Z's first album was "Reasonable Doubt", which introduced rap artist
Foxy Brown, singer Mary J. Blige, and included rapper, Notorious B.I.G.
1997 saw the release of album number 2, "In My Lifetime Vol. 1". It was
a commercial failure even though it featured Lil' Kim, Puff Daddy and DJ
Premier, and was released during the period following the publicized
murder of Notorious B.I.G. Jay-Z's third album, "Vol. 2: Hard Knock
Life", was a phenomenal success, and featured DMX. This album vaulted
Jay-Z to international acclaim, and was followed by "Vol. 3: Life and
Times of S. Carter" and "The Dynasty: Roc la Familia 2000", the latter
achieving number 1 on the US charts for 5 weeks.
In 2001, Jay-Z released The Blue Print. He has appeared in movies and
created his own clothing company, but perhaps is better known as the
unproclaimed boyfriend of Beyonce Giselle Knowles.
