The 1970s hairstyles were born out the hippie movement and leaned
towards the natural look. Hair was long, infrequently big, but
luxurious, as best exhibited by Farrah Fawcett's feathered look.
Curlers were not often required, you certainly didn't go to bed in
them, and the messy look was acceptable. Without the advantage of
straightening irons, a clothing iron sometimes was required to
highlight the best of long locks. You couldn't do it yourself, or you
could risk scorching your treasure, after which your only option might
be to convert to a shorter style. The fully-rounded Afro was a
dominant look, worn by many cultures in support equal rights. The
Shag was born along with the mullet for men.
Many still reminisce over the 1970s, thinking of the decade as a
desirable destination for one's time machine, well at least, for
television shows. The clothing and hairstyles of the 1970s combined
creativity and insanity. Disco dancing became the lighter side of
this serious decade. It started with the seemingly never ending Viet
Nam War, and was forever branded by four slain protesters at Kent
State University. Politics were rocky as the UN welcomed Communist
China and booted out their Nationalist counterpart. The U.S.
presidency slipped up with the Watergate scandal, George Wallace was
shot, and we saw the first signs of Middle East Terrorism courting the
world stage as eleven Israeli athletes were killed at the Munich
Olympics. Nixon resigned to avoid impeachment and Gerald Ford
stumbled into office. Israeli commandos freed 103 hostages from the
airport in Uganda. Back home, prom photos became worthy of future
Chuckle museums.
Two Popes passed away, the latter under mysterious circumstances. The
Jones cult shocked everyone with their mass extinction in Guyana, and
we saw the Soviets invade Afghanistan, an act that would eventually
deplete their resources and preceded the next decade's downfall of
Communism. We wonder if anyone can yet see the lesson. The household
computer was on the brink of its world-changing arrival. The Internet
was a mere twinkle in official eyes, and the biscuit-sized cell phone was an
imaginary instrument relegated to the worlds of Dick Tracy and Star
Trek.
