This was the period approaching the next war, when the wildness and
freedom of the roaring twenties was shut down to a life of uncertainty
and restrictions. The decade started out with the discovery of the
planet Pluto and the invention of sliced bread. The Empire State
building was completed in 1931. The next year air conditioning was
invented, Amelia Earhart flew solo across the Atlantic and science split
the atom. 1933 was monumental as Prohibition ended in the U.S. and FDR
launched his New Deal, but over in Europe Adolf Hitler took power in
Germany and the first Nazi concentration camp was established. In 1935,
with the disastrous Dust Bowl in full swing, Bonnie and Clyde were
ambushed and shot by the police.
In 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous was Founded, (which was the catalyst for
many alcohol rehab centers), and Social Security was enacted in the U.S.
In 1936 the Nazi propaganda Olympics took place in Berlin, the Spanish
Civil War began, and King Edward the VIII abdicated. The next year was a
year of disasters as Japan invaded China, the Hindenberg dirigible
burned and crashed on landing and Amelia Earhart disappeared while on a
round the world flight. In 1938, Orson Welles set off the War of the
World radio broadcast panic and times became more troubling in
Germany with the Night of Broken Glass. The end of the decade saw the
first commercial airline flight over the Atlantic and the invention of
the helicopter, but all was overshadowed by the beginning of World War
Two. For women's fashions, the long sleek appearance was most
desirable, shoulders were padded and puffed, and hair was waved and
shoulder-length. The midriff first appeared in formal gowns, much to the
shock of society, the low backless look was introduced, and movie stars
leaned toward the tanned look. Costume jewelry was now acceptable and
nylon was invented in 1939. For hair, the super short cuts of the 1920s
were gone, hair was longer and curls were allowed.
