1600s

-------------------

In the 1600s, the colonies had been settled, but nations were still deciding on ownership. The great Queen Elizabeth the first passed away early in the century, as the East India Company was founded and a compassionate Poor Law was passed. The King James Bible was published, making copies available to many who could read. But with Charles the First coming to power and bringing tyranny to England, it set the stage for an English Civil War and by mid century Oliver Cromwell had come to power as Lord Protector of England, leading to a Puritan scourge of the nation. Bubonic plague swept into London, followed a year later by the purifying great fire of London. Hudson's Bay Company was formed, Europe would soon be wearing beaver hats from the New World, Isaac Newton was laying the foundation of modern physics and the Bank of England was founded.

Women's hair began the century as high and feathered, with tall hats for both women and men when engaged in outdoor pursuits like riding and hunting. The Linen coif with lace trim was commonly used by married women. Soon, the feathered headgear had vanished, to be replaced by braided buns, with a feminine fringe of bangs.

The invention of a hair crimp assisted in devising new styles. By the 1620s, the hair was more compact and reduced, with curls creating tighter structures above the head, accommodating and conforming to ornate hats.

Tight curls in the mid-century mixed with a resurgence of the puffy look, then the curls relaxed, and fell to the sides of the head. The hair could be bunched on the top of the head, again allowing for a love affair with hats and bonnets.

For those with strong Puritan leanings, ostentatious display of femininity was unacceptable, and the hair was mostly hidden.
